Frequently Asked Questions

  1. QUESTION:
I have a 10 month old daughter and want to stop feeding her jarred baby food?
is this a good time to do so? Right now she eats 2 or 3 jars of pureed baby food a day, plus whatever we are eating. I would like to eliminate the jarred food now.. If this is a good time can you give me some ideas of what to cook (for breakfast, lunch, and dinners) that she can eat too? Thanks

    • ANSWER:

  2. QUESTION:
How long does jarred baby food last once you open it?
My 5 month old can't finish a whole jar of stage one baby food, but I hate to waste what's left. That and I want to save the jars so I can make my own food for her. But how long does jarred baby food last (in the fridge I'm sure) once you've opened it?
I usually feed her from a bowl, not the jar itself.

    • ANSWER:
I used it the next day or threw it away. If you feed her from the jar her saliva contaminates it and it cant be used again. Put it into a bowl and then you can use the extra later.

  3. QUESTION:
Can you feed a newborn baby jarred baby food?
In the movie Shoot 'Em Up, Clive Owen was feeding a newborn baby small amounts of jarred baby food.

Are you able to do this without a baby getting sick?

    • ANSWER:
Nope, it's harsh on their developing digestive tract, and leads to food allergies, asthma, anemia....It's best to wait until at least 6 months.

But hey, the movies never lie, right?? ;)

  4. QUESTION:
can i give my four month old baby jarred baby food before cereal?
My daughter is 4 months old and I'm going to start to introduce solids to her. Should I start with cereal or jarred baby food?

    • ANSWER:
I would wait at least another month, maybe two. Why do you want to do it now. If you start them to soon, their digestive system is not strong enough. This could cause her to throw up. Or worse intestinal blockage.
It will NOT help her sleep through the night! Her tummy will only hold as much as it will and feeding cereal will not keep her from getting hungry. Breast milk is best! Or A good formula is all she needs.
At 6 months - Cereal! Wait till you try - get the camera ready. Oh the faces she will make. You will wonder if she will ever get the hang of this.

Start with rice - easy on tummy and low chance of allergy. Then barley. Wheat last.
Then move to pureed veggies and fruit. But wait a couple of days before adding new things, give her a chance to adapt and to make sure there are no allergies. If you move to fast - she might not tolerate something but you won't know what it was.

  5. QUESTION:
Should I take jarred baby food away with me or buy over there?
Im going to Gran Canaria soon and i am wondering whether to pack a load of jarred baby food for the holiday or is it easy enough to buy it over there?

    • ANSWER:
how old is your child? reason i ask is to do with the jars and breaking in transit, couldn't you take some packet foods to make up. i haven't been to gran canaria but i've taken my children when small to both fuerteventura and lanzarote (they were 6mths) and in the supermarkets they had lots of baby foods, jars, packets etc, but you cannot guarantee the flavour choices, if your baby has an absolute favourite that may not be there for example, so we took plenty of our sons favourite and bought the rest when we were there which was fine. the important thing is the milk, is your baby still having powdered milk? is so you have got to watch which bottles water you buy to make up the feeds as the mineral count and in some is way to .Freshly-boiled tap water is the safest for making up formula feeds, but in some countries, tap water may not be so safe. If bottled water is to be used for feeds, ensure the label doesn’t say “unsuitable for infants”, use low-mineral water, and boil before using. Breastfed babies can have plain tap water from six months, as they have strong immunity, but they won’t need much if they still have plenty of breast milk. It may be best to offer cooled, boiled drinking water for babies aged up to one year.
